Disaster Reflection
How does the devastation brought from Typhoon Haiyan make you feel?
Before the typhoon hit, I've already heard from my classmates that there was a huge incoming typhoon that was about to hit the Philippines. If we were aware of the typhoon, it angers me that the people who were actually killed by the typhoon barely had knowledge of it. Some people knew that heavy rain would be occurring soon, but most did not know how harsh the rain and winds were actually going to be. The government should have warned the people more about it and evacuated the area beforehand. They said that they have informed the people but it is obvious that they did not do it well enough since thousands of people died. Some of the evacuation areas were suppose to keep the people safe, but people died in the evacuation centers as well. This shows how the government used cheap resources to get the information around and provided unstable evacuation centers.
How should people prepare for and respond to disasters like Typhoon Haiyan?
People should first be aware how hard the Typhoon is about to hit in order to know where is the best and safest place to stay in during the harsh weathers. People need to be aware beforehand more in order to gather and bring food and water along with them when migrating towards a safer place. The higher a level is and the sturdier the construction is, the safer the people staying there will be while the Typhoon is hitting.
Why do people live in vulnerable areas?
People live in vulnerable areas, because it is cheaper for them. A huge majority of people live below the poverty line so most can not afford to live in nice and safe areas.
